Káznice is a place where history is united with free creativity and community life.
The history and atmosphere of Káznice at Bratislavská 68 create a space unique in the context of Brno. This extensive former prison from the time of Maria Theresa, later used by the Nazis and Communists, is now a cultural and community centre with diverse dramaturgy and a distinct genius loci.
Concerts are heard, theatre performances echo through the halls, visual art exhibitions are seen, the space seems designed for site-specific projects, and there’s room for lectures, workshops, author readings, recitations, and masses.
Káznice is the perfect choice for a visit for anyone interested in history, architecture, or contemporary art. It is a venue for the wild Ghettofest and also Faktor K, a festival of performing and site-specific art.
Every year, Káznice also hosts dozens of external events, such as the KOMA international comics festival, Vitamin market, theatre festivals, and various charity events.
Within the 8,000 m2 is space for art studios, community associations, local dance troupes, the independent theatre Divadlo 3+kk, boxers, a community garden, and a multimedia studio.
