Vánoce Brno (Brno Christmas)
The wide expanse of Moravské náměstí (Moravian Square) brings you Christmas markets in two distinct areas – the municipal plaza and the park. On the plaza in front of the Moravian Gallery and beside St. Thomas’s Church you’ll discover not only the famous sculptures embodying Plato’s Virtues, but also a vintage children’s merry-go-round, Christmas tree, and bales of straw on which kids (and sometimes adults too) can let their hair down.
The 9 stalls here are primarily run by charities and NGOs, so any purchase will constitute a good deed of the day. Across in the park, circling above the trees, you’ll spot the Ferris wheel, from which you get a breathtaking aerial view of the city, plus a Christmas ice rink, where you can burn off all those Christmas calories.
Children’s merry-go-round
Sparks of joy leap from little kids’ faces when they catch sight of the historic merry-go-round beside the Jobst of Moravia statue. Who wouldn’t want to be whirled around on the backs of such ponies or ride in such a carriage? And just next to the biggest horse in the city! Or could it be a giraffe? Or a horraffe, even?
Straw mountain
For kids – it’s a whole heap of fun, frolicking and romping about, for grown-ups – a playful kind of seating area. This stack of straw is an unmissable attraction on Moravian Square near the Margrave Jobst statue.
