Brno Christmas
Vibrant náměstí Svobody (Freedom Square), boasting Brno’s main Christmas tree, sits in the very heart of town and is the focal point for Brno’s Christmas activities. Beneath the tree you’ll find the donation box for the Red Cross and beside it a Christmas bell, making bellringers’ wishes come true.
Arranged across the square are 62 stalls with gifts and edible treats, reigned over by the large Winter Bar (Zimní bar). At the fountain you’ll find the perfect selfie spot – the so-called Dragon’s Egg, lit with inspiring messages. And of course, this year you can rely once more on Brno’s astronomical clock dispensing its Christmas-themed baubles, and the real-time city portal to our Slovak neighbours in next-door Bratislava. Added to which is a sumptuous cultural programme, whether for children or by them, concerts across a range of musical genres, and concluding with local Brno DJs delivering their sets after dark.
Christmas tree
The year was 1924 when, on the initiative of the writer Rudolf Těsnohlídek, Czechoslovakia erected its first ever public Christmas tree. And it stood right here on Brno’s Freedom Square. This year will mark 101 years since that event.
Dragon’s Egg
This light installation was created from 11.5 kilometres of scrap tubing, a distance matching that between Freedom Square and the Brno Reservoir. Art, upcycling and tradition.
