Ars Spectrum, the latest Exposition of New Music festival, offers a wide‑ranging survey of the world of spectral music, taking listeners on a guided tour from its early forms to contemporary experiments with spectral analysis and resynthesis that enmesh algorithmic composition and AI‑driven improvisation.

This year’s festival opens with Fausto Romitelli’s monumental work An Index of Metals that expands spectral principles into an audio-visual experience and fuses them with the aesthetics of psychedelic rock, noise and electronic music. The next concert is inspired by the work of Giacinto Scelsi, a major precursor of spectralism, and presents pieces by several generations of composers united by their fascination with timbre. The festival’s electroacoustic theme is taken up by a concert featuring Karlheinz Essl, an innovator in algorithmic composition, and Franciszek Araszkiewicz, whose work explores the connection between the human mind and electronic sound. One evening is dedicated to Romanian spectralism and examines how it overlaps with improvisation.

On another, we spotlight Marek Keprt in a programme exploring spectral piano music, including works by Tristan Murail and others. Murail’s spectral ideas will be heard here in juxtaposition with cutting-edge implementations of spectral analysis and compositional algorithms that reflect and reinterpret his legacy. The festival ends with an orchestral evening showcasing iconic works of spectralism such as Gérard Grisey’s Partiels and Tristan Murail’s Désintégrations.

Faust Romitelli’s legendary audiovisual work will be performed in the unique setting of the former Bobycentrum garages. Here, the venue, music and visuals will merge into a single intense and unforgettable experience, marking the opening of the 35th edition of the New Music Exhibition.

4. 10. 2026, 19:00 – 20:30, Besední dům
Sound Under the Magnifying Glass. The program brings together the work of several generations of composers fascinated by the timbre and variability of sound.

MUSIC, MIND AND MACHINE

5. 10. 2026, 19:00 – 20:30, Besední dům
A convergence of music, technology, and creativity. The evening will showcase two distinct approaches to live electronic music, both of which are united by a quest to explore new relationships between people, technology, and sound.

SPECULA SONORUM

6. 10. 2026, 19:00 – 20:30, Besední dům
When People and Artificial Intelligence Improvise. Legendary Romanian composer Iancu Dumitrescu, together with the Dust in the Groove ensemble, guest musicians, and artificial intelligence systems, will create a living organism full of unexpected sounds, spontaneous reactions, and fascinating encounters between humans and technology.

COMPLEX SOUNDS: PIANO AND BEYOND

7. 10. 2026, 19:00 – 20:30, Besední dům
An evening of music by Tristan Murail and his followers will reveal the piano as an instrument of infinite colours, resonances and transformations.

The sound that changed music. The festival’s closing concert will feature four exceptional works that opened up new possibilities in musical thinking and inspired entire generations of composers. The Brno Philharmonic, conducted by Szymon Bywalec, will perform music full of color, energy, and sonic surprises.
