In this final orchestral concert, Filharmonie Brno led by the Polish conductor Szymon Bywalec presents four iconic works that shaped the development of spectral music in the second half of the twentieth century. The programme opens with Scelsi’s Quattro pezzi su una nota sola, a composition whose radical focus on the inner life of a single tone anticipated many of the principles of spectralism’s later aesthetics. Scelsi’s legacy lives on in Grisey’s Partiels and Murail’s Désintégrations – seminal works by founding members of the L’Itinéraire ensemble, whose music has transformed the traditional concepts of harmony, form and orchestration and ushered in new relationships between the acoustic structure of sound and the musical form. The concert concludes with Claude Vivier’s Lonely Child, one of the most significant vocal‑orchestral works of the second half of the twentieth century, featuring the renowned French soprano Donatienne Michel‑Dansac, a leading interpreter of contemporary music.
