WOODWINDS IN THE SPOTLIGHT
Filharmonie Brno
conductor Zdeněk Nádeníček
moderated by Kristýna Drášilová and Vítězslav Mikeš
written and directed by Kristýna Drášilová
We already know the orchestra—we know how powerful it can sound, and also why it needs a conductor to keep it together. But what actually lies within? What instruments make up its colorful world, who calls the shots, and who, on the other hand, patiently waits for their big moment? And can a musician in the orchestra just sit wherever they please?
And this year, you don’t have to stay just as listeners! We invite you to join forces with our orchestra: young listeners can prepare together with their teachers, and adults can dust off their instruments. Let’s experience that unique feeling together—being part of an orchestra.

Woodwinds in the spotlight
The sound produced by the breath is one of the most natural—yet it holds a surprising number of secrets. We’ll dive into the colorful world of woodwind instruments and discover that their beautiful sound is the result of a good dose of artistry and “science.” We’ll explore flutes, clarinets, bassoons, and oboes, and discover why each one sounds completely different. And how did the saxophone actually come to be classified as a “woodwind”?
A concert full of discoveries, colorful sounds, and unexpected connections awaits you. Join us to experience how music is born from a simple breath.
All audience members who are learning or have learned to play any woodwind instrument are welcome to play along with the orchestra.
Before each concert, we invite brave participants to a joint rehearsal and a simplified practice session for the woodwind section. The music workshop with instructors and orchestra members is open to children and adults who have learned their part, have the courage and desire to play, would like to perform together with the orchestra, and at the same time learn practical tips and advice directly from our professional musicians.
The music workshop always begins 60 minutes before the concert starts. Bring your own wind instrument!
