In his early works, Paul Hindemith sought to realise an ideal type of music which occupied his imagination at the time – “music for playing” (Spielmusik), stripped of extra-musical associations and arising from the joy of making music. The Kleine Kammermusik from 1922 belongs in this category.

The evocatively lyrical Summer Music by Samuel Barber moves through various moods of the summer season: it grows out of a supple, blues-like melody reminiscent of George Gershwin’s Summertime, and after several moments of tension returns to it once more.

In Small Concerto for a Sheep by the prominent Brno composers Miloš Štědroň and Arnošt Parsch, the wind quintet is joined by several additional instruments, a singer and a bleating sheep (albeit recorded).

György Ligeti’s Six Bagatelles and Endre Szervánszky’s Wind Quintet No. 1 show clear traces of influence from the music of Béla Bartók and Igor Stravinsky, and are among the cornerstones of the wind quintet repertoire.
