Daniele di Bonaventura bandoneon
Marcello Peghìn guitar

The musical collaboration between Italian bandoneonist Daniel di Bonaventura and guitarist Marcello Peghìno, as part of the Elegiaco project, represents one of those rare moments when technical virtuosity yields to pure emotion. The title of the album and the entire concert project was not chosen at random; here, “elegiac” is not synonymous with gloom or depression, but rather with noble sadness, contemplation, and a deep calm that, in today’s hurried world, feels almost like an act of rebellion.

The foundation of this collaboration is a dialogue between two instruments that hold a specific place in both Italian and global musical traditions. In the hands of Daniel di Bonaventura, the bandoneon ceases to be merely a symbol of Argentine tango. In his interpretation, its tones encompass an almost sacred, organ-like depth as well as a folksy earthiness and lightness. Opposite di Bonaventura stands Marcello Peghìn, a guitarist with a keen sense of tonal color, who does not use his instrument merely for standard accompaniment but transforms it into a full-fledged partner that creates space for the bandoneon, complements its tones, and occasionally gently provokes it into more dynamic passages.

The music on their joint album “Elegiaco” straddles genre boundaries. It features echoes of jazz improvisation, classical composition, and Mediterranean folklore, yet everything is forged into a unified, deeply intimate language. The compositions flow organically, never rushing, and give the listener space to breathe. It is music that demands concentration, but rewards the listener with a sense of complete harmony and tranquility. As you listen to the individual tracks, stories unfold before your eyes of deserted Italian squares at dusk or the endless horizons of Sardinia, where Peghìn hails from.

Although this is not a project that attempts historical reconstruction, it exudes a deep respect for Italian musical history, from Baroque structures to modern film music in the vein of Ennio Morricone. Elegiaco is thus essentially a nostalgic sonic poem. Music that is accessible to a wide audience without compromising its high artistic standards. It is the ideal accompaniment for moments when one needs to slow down and let oneself be carried away by pure beauty without grand gestures.
