200 Years without Ludwig van Beethoven

On 23 March 1827, Ludwig van Beethoven appended his signature to a will in which he bequeathed his modest estate to his nephew Karl; after putting down his pen, he declared: “I shall write no more.” The following day he agreed to receive a priest. After the priest’s departure, he reportedly said: “Plaudite, amici, comedia finita est” (Applaud, friends, the comedy is over), a phrase actors traditionally concluded a play with. He died on the evening of 26 March 1827. It is said that
at that time a storm was raging, thunder repeatedly struck, and lightning lit up the sky…

The Estonian composer Erkki-Sven Tüür is among the most important contemporary composers, regularly receiving commissions from leading performers, orchestras and institutions worldwide. His atmospheric work Phantasma, composed in 2018 as a tribute to Beethoven, transforms a motif from Beethoven’s overture Coriolan.
